Sainte Agnes - Highest fortified village of the Mediterranean coast
Belvedere on the Mediterranean, perched almost 800m above sea level, this former coaching defense of the French-Italian border on the Maginot Line has long been a coveted military site. This village is known as the "highest village on the Mediterranean coast." Today the village offers visitors hungry for authenticity, its cobbled streets, breathtaking views of the French Riviera, its sunny climate and its craftsmen painters and sculptors.
The castle proudly dominating the village has experienced many ups and downs over the centuries. For the last ten years, thanks to the excavations in this strategic location, the facts became clearer and gave their testimony about a past both rich and eventful.
Nestled inside the restored ramparts of the castle, the medieval garden, created and managed by the Association of Painters of the Sun, takes the visitor to stroll and dream in the paths lined with lavender, and discover an exceptional panorama which overlooks the Mediterranean to nearly 800 meters.
